Talented Tigers centre Andy Symons is believed to have sealed a deal to play for Tasman in New Zealand's ITM Cup, reports the Nelson Mail. The season runs from August to October and at this point it isn't know if Symons will return to Leicester, or even England at all.
Tasman finished 3rd in the ITM Cup's second division last season winning 5 games and losing 6 so will be looking to improve and gain promotion by finishing top. Though the ITM Cup's structure is reminiscent of the old French season as teams from the second division enter the play offs and can still win the trophy.
Interestingly the Tasman Chief Executive describes Symons as a reliable goal kicker and capable of playing fly half, which is an interesting string to his bow that has yet to be plucked at Tigers.
Symons has played 5 times for the Tigers first team and has been unlucky not to feature more; on his debut, a LV Cup tie away to Llanelli last season, Symons broke his leg and missed the best part of 6 months action as a result. He has played 5 times for the club's A League side impressing with his direct running and smooth passing.
This will not be Symons first trip to New Zealand as the burly centre came onto Tigers' radar whilst playing for High School Old Boys in Christchurch under the tutelage of Aaron Mauger.
Hopefully this new trip will be as successful as the last and he will return to Tigers and force his way into the match day squad on a more regular basis.
